Home Services Mandatory consultation § 37 (3)
Mandatory consultation § 37 (3)

Well prepared for the consultation visit (§ 37 (3))

Anyone who receives care allowance (Pflegegeld) must regularly arrange a consultation in their own home – the mandatory consultation visit (Beratungseinsatz). The visit itself is carried out by approved care services or recognised advice centres. I prepare you for it so that it really helps you and nothing is missed.

What the consultation visit is about

The consultation visit under § 37 (3) SGB XI serves to ensure the quality of home care and to give practical support to those providing care. If it is not taken up, the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) can reduce the care allowance and withdraw it if this happens repeatedly. You will find all the details in the guide to the consultation visit.

What I do for you

  • Keeping track of deadlines and intervals, and reminding you in good time
  • Putting together your questions and documents for the visit with you
  • Assessing the care situation honestly in advance: what is going well, where is relief missing?
  • Going through the recommendations with you after the visit and turning them into next steps

What I do not do

I do not carry out the consultation visit under § 37 (3) myself and I do not bill it to your long-term care insurance fund. Approved care services and advice centres recognised by the long-term care insurance funds are responsible for that. You can get a list from your long-term care insurance fund or from the care support centre (Pflegestützpunkt).

Honest and on an equal footing

Many people dread the mandatory appointment, seeing it as an inspection. With good preparation it becomes a conversation in which there is room for your questions and relief becomes visible early on.

Frequently asked questions

Well prepared for the consultation visit (§ 37 (3)) – your questions

No. The consultation visit may be carried out by approved care services, advice centres recognised by the long-term care insurance funds and other bodies named in the law. I prepare you and go through the result with you.

For care levels 2 to 5 receiving care allowance under § 37 (1) SGB XI, one consultation per calendar half-year is mandatory. For care levels 4 and 5, a consultation can voluntarily take place once per quarter. People with care level 1 and those receiving care benefits in kind are entitled to a voluntary consultation once per half-year. As of October 2026, § 37 (3) SGB XI.

The long-term care insurance fund reduces the care allowance by an appropriate amount and can withdraw it if it happens repeatedly. So it is worth planning the appointment early.

Ask your long-term care insurance fund or the care support centre about care services and advice centres near you. I am happy to help you choose one and plan the appointment.
