In home care, up to €131 a month is available with a care level (Pflegegrad) for certain services. Here is how to check providers, costs and billing.

What is the relief allowance?

The relief allowance under § 45b SGB XI is available to people with care level 1 to 5: €131 per month, earmarked for services that make everyday life easier and relieve family carers.

What you may use it for

  • Services that support you in everyday life (e.g. support and household help)
  • Day care and night care services
  • Short-term care services
  • Certain services from home care providers (for care levels 2 to 5, not self-care services)

The most common misunderstanding

Many people think the amount is simply paid out. That is not the case: you pay up front, or the provider bills the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) directly. Keep your invoices safe.

Saving up unused money

Amounts you have not drawn do not expire immediately. Amounts that have not been used up can be carried over into the following calendar half-year. Ask your long-term care insurance fund to confirm the amount available and the deadline.

I will help you find suitable recognised services near you and set up the billing correctly.

How to find a suitable service

First think about which help would really give you relief: support around the house, company in everyday life, or time to rest for relatives. Then ask the long-term care insurance fund about recognised services where you live. A free appointment alone is not enough: get confirmation that the specific service can be billed through the relief allowance.

Ask these questions before you book

What are the hourly rate and any travel costs? What is the minimum duration? What happens if an appointment is cancelled? Do you have to pay first yourself, or can the provider bill directly? Get the scope and price in writing. If you are asked to sign a declaration of assignment (Abtretungserklärung), make sure you understand which claims it covers before you sign.

Keep invoices in order

Sort invoices by the date of service and note when you submitted them. Compare the amount reimbursed with the invoice. A copy helps if the long-term care insurance fund has queries. Clarify your remaining balance directly with the fund before you book several appointments; an estimated balance can lead to unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
